Hey CFLoDo Community below is some great info about our first Charity in this years Charity Series!
Broadleaf Health and Education Alliance is a non-profit founded by Denna and Mike Matergia. It is based off their experience living on a tea plantation in Northeast India and the health challenges faced by the students that they taught there.
Their work focuses on developing a scalable approach to healthcare delivery for student in village primary schools throughout this region. They utilize a community health worker model to deliver health education and basic health education services. Currently they work in 10 primary schools and reach about 500 children. Funds from the Crossfit Lodo event will be used to continue this program in the 2015 school year.
Broadleaf HEA works to provide innovative solutions to health and education in the rural Eastern Himalayas. Our core initiative, currently on the ground in the rural communities of Darjeeling, India, is a comprehensive model for school healthcare. We support and train community-level health workers to facilitate learning, build capacity, and deliver basic primary health care services. This model also recognizes that a physical school environment is crucial to the improvement of student’s health, and for this reason, we bring communities together to build toilets and water systems at schools where they otherwise do not exist.
Prior to Broadleaf’s work in the Darjeeling region, students in our partner received no health education, were subjected to corporal punishment, and often had no water or sanitary facilities within their school grounds. Four years later, Broadleaf continues to grow within the region and has brought new ideas to communities and schools about positive behavior support and basic medical care and understanding. Please consider learning more about the projects and work that Broadleaf tackles everyday at our website www.broadleaf.org. We look forward to working out with you on Saturday!
Come help us support Mike and Denna Matergia, and their awesome organization! Anyone is welcome!
