4 Reasons Crossfitters should see a Sports Chiropractor. By Craig Longley
In my experience of treating hundreds of CrossFit Athletes on a regular basis, these are the Top 4 Reasons why seeing a Sports Chiropractor is important.
1. Helps Keep You Active. Every time you use a muscle you create little microtears in the tissue. This is a normal process that the body will then respond to by laying down more tissue in an attempt to make the movement more efficient. This process generally takes 48-72 hours to complete. In Crossfit, however, we tend to use the same muscles over and over without letting them fully heal (active rest does NOT count). This creates a system where hardening and fibrosing begins to occur creating less functional tissue and perpetuating future injury/ies. Over use injuries are one of the top reasons people cannot continue with a sport or exercise. Good news is that with soft tissue techniques such as active release, graston, and fascial distortion you can correct these issues allowing tissue to heal properly and remain active!
2. Heal Faster. The techniques described above are considered the “Gold Standard” for soft tissue injury or dysfunction in the sports health care field. Olympic, professional, and college level athletes everywhere take advantage of these treatments in order to be on top of their game and in peak condition. They don’t have time to wait for injuries to heal slowly using passive therapies.
3. Increased performance both mentally and physically. Posturally and ergonomically, we are set up to be flexor and internal rotation dominant/extensor and external rotation inhibited as stated by Vladimir Janda, a pioneer and innovator in functional biomechanics. Extension and external rotation is also considered neurologically “healthy”. The fact that as humans we can stand up on two feet provides so much more sensory input to the brain and increases our neurological function and capacity. Think babies and older people… weaker in neurological function and often seen having trouble with ambulation – direct correlation. Crossfit specializes in activating extensor tone seeing as everything involves a strong “posterior chain” (traps, core, glutes, and hamstrings) which can produce injury if you have a hard time accessing or using it. We specialize in muscle testing/neurological testing to determine where you are and what your weaknesses may be then teach you how to gain control of those muscles. By doing this you will find that you become stronger, more efficient, and more stable in your movements. Not to mention the increase in neurological activity will inevitably result in increased cognitive function, memory, balance, and mood.
4. Less wear and tear on your joints. When Crossfitters get tired, or can’t maintain extensor and external rotation tone then the stress of crossfitting will be placed on our joints causing minor misalignment. This will lead to altered biomechanics, compensation, uneven wear and tear and eventually degeneration of the joints and the tissues that support them if not corrected. The most common joints effected in crossfit are your thoracic spine, ribs, lumbar spine, pelvic joints, knees, and ankles. A chiropractor is taught how to identify an unhealthy or misaligned joint and to restore motion to that joint using an adjustment. Maintaining movement promotes healthy joints and prolongs your ability to use them. You are only given one body so you might as well take the best care of it you can if you plan on being active your entire life!
Chiro Craig is at CrossFit on Tuesday’s from 5pm-7pm for treatment and adjustments. Come say ‘hi,’ ask questions, etc. 20 minute treatment and adjustments are $40.00. It is best to get adjusted before you workout. (Muscles tend to be tight and inflammed post workout making it had to make adjustments)
