I was listening to the radio the other day, and I heard the DJ saying “If you think that working out is going to make you live longer, you might want to think again. A new study shows that your age at death is much more linked to other factors than working out.”
First of all, don’t believe everything you hear, there are many studies that will correlate longevity to certain physical traits that are very closely linked to physical capacity, which only comes about through training, exercise etc.
But beyond that, it isn’t about a number, is it? If someone asked you if you wanted to live to be 100, i think a lot of us would say, “well it depends” right? I don’t want to spend 20 years “alive and not living.” I’d much rather be functional and able to do “stuff” until my last day…wouldn’t you? And, I think importantly, that is the point of functional exercise, and the thing that drives me to care about your fitness, and goals, and desires.
Which brings me to 2016. Here we are, on the cusp of another year. I’ve talked with a few of you who have asked me about personal goals and desires in fitness, and I’d love to hear from more. What do you want in 2016? What about beyond 2016? Because, realistically, 2016 will go fast, just as 2015 did. But to what will this year be a springboard, a catalyst?
I’d love if you joined me in CFLD’s Paleo Challenge which starts the second week of January, and will run for 6 weeks. Besides being a tool for you to actually see what you are eating meal to meal, it will be a chance to build community, lose some weight, and even win some cash if you finish the challenge with more points than everyone else.
And, quick note of clarification, it won’t just be “eating paleo.” I am also going to allow Zone Eating, and Primal eating, all of which will be explained more in the coming days.
Even if eating isn’t on your list of things to change, I’d love to be on the same road of progress, and recently we joined the app “SugarWOD” which will help you see your progress over time.
So, forget anyone who doesn’t believe that fitness, health, and a longevity in quality of life are attainable with practice, intention, and diligence. Because they are. Lets all make 2016 our year of getting more quality time. And because words matter, and action words count, lets call it our year of quality time acquisition. Because that is what we seek, not some number “at the end.”
