We will have a meeting discussing many of these points and any of your questions on Wednesday evening at 6 pm.
Scoresheets/more details (WOD, scoring breakdowns etc) available by WED.
Your entry fee is $40 which covers your entry into the grand prize, along with guidance and a scoresheet to keep track of your progress (which is what you will need to turn in to “win”)
If you do $55, you get everything plus any CFLD shirt you want!
If you do the “Ground Running Package,” you’ll get a bag of approved Protein, a bottle of fish oil, a shirt, and your entry fee for the challenge. This will be $130, but be a great way to get a few useful tools for the road ahead.
Welcome to the 2016 version of the paleo challenge for CrossFit LoDo and CrossFit LoDo at RiNo!! Yes it is a challenge, but it isn’t an elimination challenge. If you “cheat,” you are still in contention for the grand prize. All 3 “styles” of eating for the challenge will be scored and competing against one another. So, the first place winner may have eaten “primal” while the second place winner may have eaten “paleo.”
The styles of eating acceptable for the challenge:
Paleo- Think of this one as not a quantity based, but quality based. Your food will be based on vegetables, animal sources, seeds and nuts, some starch and NO sugar. If the sugar is naturally occurring in food, say in an apple, it IS paleo. However, if there is sugar added to the food, say (some forms of) applesauce, it is NOT paleo.
Primal – This is like Paleo, but a bit more animal fat based. The same rules apply, but milk, cheeses, and other dairy products WILL be allowed. However, the milk products will need to be GRASSFED, and as minimally processed as possible. The best place to find these options will be Vitamin Cottage, Whole Foods, and Sprouts.
Zone – Think of this as not a “quality” based diet but rather a quantify based diet. All “meals” and “snacks” will be in the proper “Zone” ratio, which means you will have to measure your food. This process is tedious at first, but is a very powerful tool in knowing how many macronutrients are in your meal. The zone diet requires you to eat 7 grams of protein, 9 grams of carbs, and 3 grams of fat (in that ratio, they call it a “block”) for every meal and snack. There will probably be the most questions about this diet, and I’m happy to field them all rather than get into a long description here. But depending on goals of aesthetics and athletic achievement would determine how many blocks you would eat.
Reasons you would eat each way:
Paleo: Great way to stop drinking alcohol, clean out the system from gluten and other things in our food supply that our body doesn’t handle all that well, lose weight and gain muscle mass. Remember, this is NOT a quantity driven diet. If you want to GAIN weight on paleo, you will just need to eat a large amount of quality paleo food.
Primal: Because of the fat content and protein content of animal products, many people find Primal to be a bit easier alternative to Paleo. However, the products must be healthy. I won’t want anything added to the cheese, milk, cream, etc other than strictly the dairy product. IF YOU ARE IN DOUBT EMAIL ME!! Also, it must be grass-fed. Healthier animals give healthier products. There is much more to it than that but, that will be enough for now.
Zone: If you find it hard to find the right ingredients that are “paleo,” an option that can be a bit cheaper as far as cost (but perhaps more expensive as far as time, especially in the beginning” is Zone Eating. I would eat this if I wanted to be a bit more able to eat any ingredient, and wanted to lose or gain weight, just watch my quantities. The great thing about zone is you match your macronutrient content to your desired outcome. You “eat to your desired level,” along with your body type. If you are a small male and want to put on weight, you can eat more than your “prescribed” amount. If you want to lose, you can eat less. So long as you are eating in the right quantities, you can eat ANYTHING!! Greg Glassman, CrossFit CEO, has for years claimed eating zone will take you to your next fitness level.
